Family Documentary

family_documentary_photographer_lincoln_newark_sleaford_granthamAs a child, do you remember what your favourite part of storybooks was? The pictures of course! I remember running my hands across the pages and pointing out details in the illustrations each and every time. Sometimes I would just stare at a page for minutes before moving on. Then, as I got older, I found myself drifting to books with the most visual storytelling I could find. A descriptive, moving narrative (and an awesome cover) had me hooked, and I couldn’t put it down.

The truth is, people are visual. We remember things from how we see them, how we envision them in our mind’s eye. I think this is why I was drawn to photography, and to documentary storytelling in particular. My images always focus on those captured moments – the little things, the secret cuddles, the holding of hands, the hug, the silly face, the giggles, the sideways glance, the cake-covered face and every other little moment that helps to tell the story.

The little every day things that make up this thing we call life. It isn’t the stiff formal family portrait that was taken in another person’s studio, it is what happens in the place most precious to you – your home.

During a family documentary session, I come to your home, or another place that is special to you, or we could even do both (or more!) and then I help tell your story.

This type of session is longer than a normal portrait session, and can last from 1.5-2hrs, sometimes even longer. We spend some time at the beginning, looking around, getting to know each other, and having a chat, so that everyone feels familiar with having me around. After that, we begin, and I document your life. More details will be sent with your welcome pack, which is chock full of information, thoughts, and ideas to help prepare and inspire you, but just to give you an idea, we could document play time, story time, bedtime, bath, baking, jumping on the bed (a definite must in every session!), painting, bubbles, running, splash time in the garden (a sprinkler in the summer is a surefire win), throwing leaves, a family snowball fight, and more….
